Kynþáttafordómar – í stuttu máli (e. Racism – in a nutshell), by Kristín Loftsdóttir, has been published in 2021 by Háskólaútgáfan.
Not long ago, many in Europe and the United States argued that racism was a thing of the past. Political upheavals and the rise of populist parties in recent years have, in turn, brought such prejudices back to light as one of the great challenges of our time. In Iceland, discussion about this kind of prejudice surfaces periodically, it is usually condemned, but people also wonder what they are and whether and how they are part of Icelandic reality.
In the book Racism – in a nutshell, racist ideas are examined. The purpose of the book is twofold. On the one hand to give a clear explanation of racism in light of recent academic debate and on the other hand to show how racial ideas have appeared in Icelandic discourse in various forms, both in the past and in the present.
The book is published in Icelandic with the aim to contribute to an informed debate on this topic.
